Kit Pick Up:

Race kit pick up will on Friday, August 22 from 17:00-20:00; at the Best Western Dorchester in downtown Nanaimo. We encourage you to register online but there will be in-person registration available at the kit pick up where you will be able to pay via cash or cheque. Please note if you are registering in-person for the 11km race you will have to provide your own kayak and support person because it will be to late for me to arrange it.

Ferry and Start Times:

The ferry runs every 30 minutes from Maffeo-Sutton Park to the Island throughout the day from 9:00am to 9:00pm.

There will be a pre-race briefing 30 minutes before each race where you will be updated on course conditions, and a quick rundown of the race rules. The powerboat volunteers meeting is at 12:15.

The 11km race starts at 1:00 pm (13:00) and the 2km race will start at 3:00pm (15:00). These times were chosen to maximize the flood and slack tides. Here are the tide tables for reference.

If you miss all the morning ferries you can still come and cheer on the other swimmers. Sorry, no refunds for missing the ferry.

If you wish there is also a water taxi service.

Race Rules:

Along with male/female categories there are 2 additional categories for the swimmers Tradition Swimwear and Wetsuit. Definitions and requirements for these categories and a complete set of race rules are included as part of the Nanaimo Ocean Swim Safety Plan and Race Rules document.

Aid Station:

I am planning for one aid station at the Start/Finish. 11km swimmers can look over what we have but are encouraged to bring their own race food. Remember the old rule never try something new on race day! If you have any special requests please let me know and I will see what I can do.

There will be a small awards ceremony after each event and lots of food at the end of the races.

We have arranged a race rate with the Best Western Dorchester in downtown Nanaimo it is across from Inner Harbour at the corner of Church and Front Street; a simple 500m walk to the Newcastle Island Ferry. More information and rates are available here Please let them know you are part of the Nanaimo Ocean Swim.
